In this class we will explore the Ashtanga vinyasa method.
Ashtanga vinyasa was developed and lead by the Jois family of Mysore India.
Based on the philosophy of Ashtanga yoga from the yoga sutras of Patanjali.
Ashtanga yoga translates to the 8 limbs of yoga. In the west we associate yoga with poses (asana), this is but one of the limbs, along with breath, meditation, concentration, and sensory control. The first 2 limbs are based on our inward and outward actions, often translated to our do’s and don’ts. Especially non-violence (ahimsa), which is said to start with the self and our thoughts inwards towards ourselves and outwards towards others. When we use Asana as vehicle to practice the other limbs of self discovery, we can surrender to the imperfections, being in the moment, with the body and the breath. Observing our wants to be else where or projecting our imperfections away from our accountability, accepting our honest assesment of our starting point physically, mentally, and spiritually so that we can grow.
It can often be associated with its full 90 minute practices starting with primary sequence (Yoga Chikitsa – Yoga Therapy) This 90 minute can be very challenging even for those that have practiced for a while.
Traditionally it would be taught one pose at a time, once we have learnt the pose when ready the next pose is added as the practice develops.
I believe in meeting the student where they are and see the sequences as measure of progression rather than a goal. Some poses or movements may never be achieved by the individual and this ok.
The breath and sensations in the body should be the guide to the practice, letting us know when we are pushing too much.
This class will be exploring the movement linked with the breath, through a shortened standing sequence of foundational poses to warm and open up the body, ready for the seated poses and their stages, taking into account the risks and benefits associated with them. Working on alignment and adaptations that may be required.
This class is for those looking for an exploration or an introduction to ashtanga. Also for those that may already have a strong practice and are looking for the finer details of the postures and the limbs.
